Dolphin cottage surrounds are a walker's paradise. To the East, the gentle cliff walks take you past the Black Rock, the famous Bead Beach, and the Double Mouth Nature Reserve. Here you can swim, kayak and fish. Further along the coast lies Morgan Bay, a beautiful beach village.
To the west of Dolphin Cottage is an easy walk to Marshstrand and Haga Haga. Another beach town ideal for swimming.
Snorkelling in the pristine rock pools around Black Rock, especially the tidal pool -Dolly's Pool, is an amazing way to entertain the whole family while observing many of the ocean creatures and sea life of the wild coast.
Black Rock is the perfect place for the keen fisherman. Cast a line from the surf or rocky ledges or go fishing in the lagoons and rivers. Fish caught along this coast include Galjoen, Blacktail, Blue Fish, Musselcracker, Kob and many more. There is a strict catch and release regulation unless the fish is the approved catch size. Make sure to have your fishing license with you!
Black Rock and the surrounding areas are great for water activities including swimming and surfing. A small beach, rock pools, and a tidal lagoon offer the best swimming.
The warm lagoon is the perfect place for children to swim and play.
On top of the hill next to the house is a peaceful spot for watching the dazzling sunsets over the sea.
For all the eager bird watchers and photographers out there, Black Rock is home to more than 100 bird species which includes the rare Narina Trogon! The silent setting provides the ideal environment to get close to the magnificent birds and allows you to easily identify them.
In 1608, a Portuguese ship, The Santo Espirito was wrecked off the Bead Beach, estimated to be close to the Black Rock itself. As the name suggests, Bead Beach is a great place to hunt for the shipwreck's treasures, including carnelian beads, ming porcelain, and money cowries. Bead Beach is about a 30-minute walk to the east of the cottage and is also home to hundreds of shells. In Dolphin Cottage, three plaques in the lounge explain each item and the Santo Espirito in more detail.
